Gross vs Net WPM: How Typing Speed Is Really Measured

If you’ve ever finished an online typing test and felt confused about why the “real” score looked lower than the words-per-minute number flashing on screen mid-test, you’re not imagining it. Most typing tests quietly track two different speeds at once, and the one they report at the end usually isn’t the one they showed you while you were typing. Understanding the gap between them tells you a lot more about your actual typing ability than either number alone.
Gross WPM vs net WPM
Gross WPM is the simplest possible measure: how many words you produced divided by how long it took you, full stop. It doesn’t care whether those words were correct. If you bang out 250 words in 5 minutes, your gross WPM is 50, whether every word is perfect or half of them are gibberish.
Net WPM is the number that actually matters for most purposes, and it’s the one typing tests usually mean when they show you a final score. It takes your gross speed and subtracts a penalty based on how many errors you left uncorrected. The idea is straightforward: a fast typist who makes a lot of mistakes hasn’t really produced usable text any faster than a slower, cleaner typist. Net WPM tries to capture “usable output,” not just raw finger movement.
Accuracy is a third, separate figure. It doesn’t measure speed at all; it measures what percentage of your total words were typed correctly. You can have a high accuracy and a mediocre net WPM (a careful but slow typist), or a decent net WPM despite a few errors (a fast typist who loses a little ground to mistakes). All three numbers, gross WPM, net WPM, and accuracy, tell you something different, and looking at just one can be misleading.
The formula
Gross WPM = Words Typed / Time (minutes)
Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Errors / Time)
Accuracy = (Words Typed - Errors) / Words Typed * 100
Notice that the error penalty in the net WPM formula is scaled by time, not just subtracted as a flat number. Nine errors in a three-minute test costs you more speed per minute than nine errors in a thirty-minute test would, because the penalty is spread over less time. That’s intentional: a fast, error-prone burst should be penalized more per minute than the same number of mistakes stretched across a much longer session.
Worked example: 250 words in 5 minutes, 5 errors
Say you type 250 words in 5 minutes and leave 5 errors uncorrected in the final text.
- Gross WPM: 250 / 5 = 50
- Net WPM: 50 - (5 / 5) = 50 - 1 = 49
- Accuracy: (250 - 5) / 250 * 100 = 98.00%
Your fingers moved at 50 words per minute, but because 5 of those 250 words were wrong, your net speed drops by exactly 1 WPM to 49. The accuracy figure, 98.00%, tells you the same underlying story from a different angle: 245 of your 250 words were correct.
Worked example: 180 words in 3 minutes, 9 errors
Now compare a shorter, faster test: 180 words in 3 minutes, with 9 errors.
- Gross WPM: 180 / 3 = 60
- Net WPM: 60 - (9 / 3) = 60 - 3 = 57
- Accuracy: (180 - 9) / 180 * 100 = 95.00%
This typist is faster on a gross basis (60 WPM versus 50), but the error penalty bites harder here because there are more errors packed into less time. Losing 3 WPM to a 3-minute error penalty is a bigger relative hit than losing 1 WPM to a 5-minute one, even though the raw error count (9 versus 5) looks like it’s “only” about double. Time is doing a lot of the work in that formula, and it’s easy to overlook if you’re just eyeballing the error count.
What actually counts as an error
This is the part most typing tests handle inconsistently, and it’s worth understanding before you compare scores across different tools. The convention this calculator follows, and the one most typing tests use, is that an error only counts if it’s still present in your final, submitted text. If you typed a wrong letter but backspaced and fixed it before finishing, that’s not an error for this formula; it never made it into your output.
This matters because it means “errors” here isn’t really measuring how many mistakes you made while typing. It’s measuring how many mistakes you failed to catch. Two typists who make the exact same number of keystroke slips can end up with very different error counts: one who proofreads and corrects as they go will show a clean error total, while one who barrels through without checking will rack up a higher number, even if their raw typing accuracy in the moment was identical. Some tests do count every correction attempt, including ones you later fixed, as a separate signal (sometimes shown as a “correction count” alongside errors), but that’s a different metric from the uncorrected-error count this formula uses.
One more nuance: because net WPM subtracts the error penalty from gross WPM, it’s mathematically possible, on a test with an extremely high error rate relative to a short time, for net WPM to come out at zero or even negative. In practice this only shows up in edge cases (a very brief test with a large number of mistakes), and most calculators, including this one, should be read with that boundary in mind rather than treated as a hard floor.

Why is net WPM lower than gross WPM? Net WPM penalizes errors: every uncorrected mistake reduces your effective speed, even though your fingers typed just as many words per minute. It’s meant to reflect usable output, not just raw finger speed, which is why it’s the number most typing tests report as your “real” score.
Does accuracy tell me the same thing as net WPM? No. Accuracy is a percentage of correct words out of total words typed and has nothing to do with time. Net WPM combines speed and errors into one figure. You can have high accuracy with a modest net WPM (a slow, careful typist) or a strong net WPM despite an imperfect accuracy score (a fast typist who still comes out ahead after the penalty).
If I fix a typo before finishing, does it still count against me? Generally, no. Most typing tests, and the formula here, only count errors that remain in your final submitted text. A mistake you caught and corrected mid-test doesn’t factor into the error total, so proofreading as you go can improve your net WPM even if it doesn’t change how fast your fingers moved.
