Retirement

401(k) Calculator

Project your 401(k) balance at retirement from your contributions, employer match, and expected return.

Inputs

The share of your salary your employer will match, regardless of how much more you contribute.

How much of your matched contribution your employer adds, e.g. 50 for a 50% match, 100 for a dollar-for-dollar match.

Result

Projected balance at retirement

$507,017.59

Your annual contribution$4,200.00
Employer annual match$2,100.00
Total contributed (incl. current balance)$177,500.00
Growth from investment returns$329,517.59

How the calculation works

Works out your annual dollar contribution and your employer's matching contribution (capped at whatever share of salary they match), adds them together, then projects that combined annual contribution growing every year at your expected return alongside your current balance. This assumes contributions are made once a year and growth compounds annually; a real 401(k) that contributes every paycheck and compounds more frequently will land close to, but not identical to, this estimate.

Formula

Annual Contribution = (Your Contribution % + Employer Match) × Salary. Projected Balance = Current Balance × (1 + r)^n + Annual Contribution × [((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r].

Examples

  • $20,000 balance, $70,000 salary, 6% contribution, 50% match up to 6%, 7% return, 25 years

$507,017.59 projected balance ($6,300.00/year combined contribution)

  • $50,000 balance, $90,000 salary, 10% contribution, 100% match up to 4%, 6% return, 15 years

$413,105.13 projected balance ($12,600.00/year combined contribution)
