How the calculation works

Adds up your three budget categories and subtracts the total from your income to see what's left unallocated (or overspent, if negative). It also shows what share of your income each category actually takes up, so you can compare it to the popular 50/30/20 guideline: roughly 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings and extra debt paydown.

Formula

Leftover = Income − (Needs + Wants + Savings). Each category's percentage = Category Amount ÷ Income × 100, compared against the 50/30/20 rule (50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings).

Examples

  • $5,000 income, $2,500 needs, $1,200 wants, $800 savings

    $500.00 leftover (50% needs, 24% wants, 16% savings)

  • $6,000 income, $3,200 needs, $1,500 wants, $1,000 savings
