How the calculation works

Walks through the 2026 federal brackets from the bottom up, taxing only the slice of your taxable income that falls within each bracket at that bracket's rate, the same 'progressive tax' method the IRS uses. Your marginal rate is just the rate on the bracket your last dollar lands in; it is not the rate applied to your whole income.

Formula

Total Tax = sum, across each bracket up to your taxable income, of (income in that bracket) × (that bracket's rate). Marginal Rate = the rate of the bracket containing your last dollar of taxable income.

Examples

  • $60,400 taxable income, single

    22% marginal bracket, $8,000.00 total tax (13.25% effective rate)

  • $110,800 taxable income, married filing jointly

    22% marginal bracket, $13,800.00 total tax (12.46% effective rate)
