How the calculation works

Bonuses are usually taxed as 'supplemental wages.' The IRS lets employers withhold a flat 22% federal rate on bonuses up to $1 million instead of using your regular payroll withholding tables, which is what most employers do. That withholding rate is not your final tax rate. Your actual tax owed on the bonus is determined by your total annual income when you file, so this shows what's withheld from the check, not necessarily what you'll ultimately owe.

Formula

Tax Withheld = Bonus Amount × (Withholding Rate ÷ 100). Net Bonus = Bonus Amount − Tax Withheld.

Examples

  • $5,000 bonus, flat 22% withholding

    $3,900.00 net bonus ($1,100.00 withheld)

  • $2,000 bonus, custom 30% withholding

    $1,400.00 net bonus ($600.00 withheld)
